Sewing bird
Overview
A sewing bird holds cloth taut while its user stitches. Pressing the tail opens the beak; releasing it closes the grip. The device supplies a steady hold during hand sewing.
The Illinois museum’s example combines embossed brass and fabric, with a small pincushion below the bird’s breast. Its ornate design places a practical clamp among decorative Victorian sewing accessories; the account does not identify its maker.
