Overview

The lookdown has a deep, very thin, roughly diamond-shaped body, an abruptly truncated front and a slightly concave upper front profile. Its eye sits high while its mouth is low. Bigelow and Schroeder describe tall sickle-shaped second dorsal and anal fins, long pointed pectorals, a slender tail base and a deeply forked tail. Adult first-dorsal spines and pelvic fins are inconspicuous. Several juvenile crossbands fade during growth; young fish also differ in their elongated fin spines.

Brady and colleagues measured polarized reflectance from live lookdowns and compared it with pinfish and a simple mirror strategy. Their optical measurements and camouflage modelling found that the lookdown can reduce polarization contrast across different illumination conditions. Reflectance preserves some incident polarization orientations while randomizing others, rather than acting as an ordinary vertical mirror. These results concern context-dependent optical concealment; they do not mean the animal is invisible to every predator or that an ordinary illustration reproduces its polarization response.
