Imagined petition and consultation diagram beside a tropical forest.
Setting, tools and layout imagined; not ethnographic evidence.
Overview
A July 2026 statement from the Association of Saamaka Communities, VSG, supports traditional leaders’ rejection of a proposed five-kilometre land law in its current form. It argues that communities should determine the extent of their living areas and be consulted before decisions. This is a particular public political position, rather than a boundary map or a uniform view assigned to every household.
Suriname’s National Assembly records receiving VSG’s petition in July 2024. The requests included stopping logging along the Palmeras road, informed consent, an independent environmental study and recognition of collective land ownership. Receipt of the petition and promises of follow-up do not establish that the requested legal protections were implemented.
