Maija, the Rose of Turaida

Overview

The museum tells of an orphan raised near Turaida Castle who becomes engaged to gardener Viktor Heil. Jakubowski impersonates Viktor in a note and lures her to their cave meeting place. Facing coercion, Maija claims her red scarf prevents injury; his sword kills her. Testimony later clears the falsely accused Viktor. The scarf is a deception within the story, not proof of magic.

A museum-hosted analysis by Janīna Kursīte distinguishes the legendary narrative from its documentary foundation. It notes that Magnus Wolfeldt retold rather than fully reproduced the court record, and discusses folklorist Pēteris Šmits’s doubts. Literary versions develop the story further; they do not independently verify each episode.

The church-hill memorial makes the legend part of Turaida’s commemorative landscape. Its presence does not certify every detail of the narrative.
