Overview
The first two sisters take food in the fire cave and reject the enormous dog when it seeks a share. Its attacks leave the first without a hand and the second without a nose. Helga instead cooks carefully and does not steal food. She encounters the dog alongside the giant, and initially chooses to rest in its lair because the master appears still more frightening.
After the giant’s enchanted shape has fallen away and Helga prepares to leave, the dog approaches and offers its forepaw bearing a beautiful ring. It has no personal name in the tale. The narration does not say the dog is another enchanted prince, transforms with its master or later travels to the wedding; those would be additions beyond this witness.
