Overview

Smithsonian's National Zoo describes this sengi as a compact mammal with a long flexible nose, rounded ears, a thin tail and slightly longer hind legs. Reddish fur covers the head and chest, while the hindquarters are black; a pale ring surrounds each dark eye. It searches forest leaf litter for invertebrates using smell and its snout. During the day it forages, retiring at night to a nest of leaves and twigs.

The American Society of Mammalogists database places Rhynchocyon petersi in Macroscelidea and Afrotheria, rather than the true-shrew group. Its recorded distribution includes eastern Tanzania, Mafia and Zanzibar, and southeastern Kenya. The database retains historical names and identifies the original description by Bocage. Those nomenclatural records document naming history, not the date the species evolved. Its relationship to elephants therefore concerns shared ancestry within a broader mammal clade, not descent from modern elephants.
