Overview
Rajako, glossed as the monkey in Renel’s Loholoka fabliau, travels towards an islet with Rafaraka, Rasompatra and Rapizona. His companions bring provisions; he brings none. While they eat, he gnaws their canoe until it leaks and sinks. The others swim to shore, leaving him behind. Two approaching animals refuse his promised payment for transport. Lanorana finally carries him to land. Rajako then collects broken pottery in a sack and entices his rescuer inside by claiming the promised money is there. He sews the sack shut and proposes selling its occupant to his grandmother. When she cannot pay, he has Lanorana cooked instead.
Rajako sends his grandmother away with a false report that her child is ill. He eats part of the meat and fouls the remainder. On returning she curses him and subsequently soils Randiambe’s water reservoir. Randiambe offers Rafano a reward for capturing Rajako. Rafano, explicitly glossed as the large sea turtle, has himself coated with glue and waits on the stone where Rajako normally sits. The monkey becomes stuck and is brought to Randiambe. This capture uses a prepared adhesive trap; the text does not describe a stone transformed into a turtle.
Facing cooking, Rajako asks to be put into the pot whole and alive, with no water added. Once enclosed, he urinates as much as he can, enduring the heat for a time. When the people stop watching closely, he lifts the lid, jumps out and escapes. The ending preserves his survival after the rescuer’s killing and the grandmother’s curse, rather than supplying a final moral punishment. Lanorana is not identified to a modern species in the tale’s notes, and the neighboring animal names are retained as narrative participants without converting every brief appearance into another independent creature profile.
