AI concept of Raizal creole-language listening and dialogue across generations.
Setting, tools and layout imagined; not ethnographic evidence.
Overview
Colombia's Ministry of Culture identifies an English-based creole spoken in San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina. Its language programme describes encounters held since 2011 to strengthen Raizal and Palenquero linguistic heritage, make it visible and develop preservation and vitality measures. These are related programmes for distinct communities.
Contributors to IGAC's San Andrés collaboration identify their community with both the Colombian Caribbean and a wider Caribbean belonging. They describe ancestry involving Miskito Indigenous people, enslaved Africans and European connections. This community statement is a particular self-description, rather than a biological classification or a definition of all island residents.
