Overview
The insects are described with yellow wings bearing intricate black patterns and mathematically impossible edge detail. Their movement does more than disturb nearby air: it can produce a weather event, joining tiny animal activity with an outsized environmental consequence. Interesting Times places flocks of the butterflies within the Lady's intervention over the Counterweight Continent, making the creature relevant to the novel's large-scale conflict.
The independent guide also identifies a later Feet of Clay reference to material produced by the caterpillar stage. That mention is not turned into a complete toxicological profile or a prescription for a real substance. The Annotated Pratchett File explains the mathematical-pattern reference, while the association with the butterfly effect is a critical reading of the literary joke rather than an inspected first-person origin statement. Proposed courtship functions in the guide remain speculative and are not promoted to established behavior.
First appearances & development
Interesting Times, published in 1994, provides the defining reviewed butterfly treatment, and Feet of Clay in 1996 mentions the caterpillar. The fictional scientific name and mathematical imagery belong to Discworld's satire. They do not establish a real insect taxon or prove an exhaustive earlier appearance search across every companion text.
Canon & continuity
The inspected L-Space entry identifies wing patterns, weather generation, the Lady's flock and the later caterpillar mention. The Annotated Pratchett File supplies a separately inspected explanation of the Mandelbrot reference. Original novels remain the primary bibliography; an uncertain courtship interpretation is excluded and no fresh full-book reading is claimed.
