Overview
Alta Verapaz’s institutional directory locates the Q’eqchi’ linguistic community of Guatemala’s Maya language academy in Cobán. It describes the academy’s language teaching, research, grammars, dictionaries, translation and assessment functions. The academy serves multiple Maya linguistic communities; its general remit is not evidence that every listed service occurs in each Q’eqchi’ locality.
Guatemala’s cultural information system describes Q’eqchi’ speakers concentrated in Alta Verapaz, with communities in other northern departments and Toledo in Belize. Its Cobán account explicitly cautions that community limits cannot be defined precisely. These are living language connections across places, not a territory map, a single homogeneous people or an equation between language and nationality.
