Overview

Uyan and colleagues recorded one Mersin Bay colony: a relatively rigid, pitted gelatinous tube with a narrower closed end, an open end with a diaphragm, and backward-directed blunt surface projections. One specimen cannot establish universal size or population trends.

Stenvers and colleagues combined observations, sampling and genetic evidence around Cabo Verde. They estimated carbon transfer through migrating colonies and sinking remains and recorded other animals using colonies for settlement, shelter or food. These local observations establish several ecological roles without making every association permanent or extending one regional flux estimate to the entire ocean.
