Overview
James Case's primary study used sensitive video recording to analyse display and courtship in Pteroptyx tener. Its public abstract reports males flashing together during flight, competition, courtship and mating. Courting males mounted females and directed light toward their eyes; both sexes exchanged flashes around copulation. The proposed interference with rival signals was an interpretation, not an experimentally demonstrated universal function. Synchrony here refers specifically to coordinated male flashing, not every light produced by every individual.
Ohba and Wong's comparative field abstract records Pteroptyx tener colonies in the brackish part of Malaysia's Kerteh River, contrasted with Pteroptyx bearni nearer more saline water. Both species displayed on vegetation and sometimes shared trees where they overlapped. Only P. tener flashed synchronously in their comparison. These observations distinguish local display behaviour and habitat use; they do not identify every mangrove firefly as this species or imply that mixed colonies all flash together.
