Modern AI interpretation of a whole Eastern ringtail possum.
Modern AI ringtail possum interpretation; fine forefoot and tail tissues are schematic.
Overview
The Eastern ringtail possum belongs to Pseudocheiridae and Diprotodontia. The Australian Museum describes variable grey to nearly black upper fur, pale patches behind the eyes and on the belly, and orange-brown tinges on limbs and tail. Small rounded ears and a tapered prehensile tail distinguish its form. The tail is furred above, bare underneath and white at the tip. A gap between the second and third forefoot fingers aids gripping; the tail curls when not being used.
University of Michigan records describe this possum as nocturnal and strongly arboreal. Small family groups may share a drey built from bark, twigs and ferns in a tree fork or dense vegetation. Its diet consists principally of leaves, including eucalyptus, but also flowers, buds, nectar and fruit; young foliage is preferred. These accounts explain an animal adapted to moving and feeding among branches, without making every nest a tree hollow or treating all recorded local populations as identical in coat or behaviour.
