Overview
The FSM Visitors Board identifies Pohnpeian as a distinct language and culture within the multilingual federation and distinguishes Polynesian communities in Pohnpei State from Pohnpeian identity. It notes continuing Nahnmwarki leadership, household and clan relationships, and the 1978 federation vote.
A College of Micronesia observer's account of the 2003 Pohnpei Culture Day records women performing seated songs with dokia sticks, men performing a standing dance, and locally made hibiscus-fibre skirts and flower headdresses. It documents that event rather than all present practice.
UNESCO locates the Nan Madol ceremonial centre off Pohnpei, with surviving architecture mainly from about 1200–1500 CE, and links its preservation to continuing Pohnpeian ceremonial traditions and Nahnmwarki authority. These dates do not mark the origin of Pohnpeian identity.
History & identity
Not established in these sources; Nan Madol's architectural dates evidence a ceremonial centre, not ethnogenesis.
