Overview

The Others are mysterious beings encountered beyond the Wall, associated with cold, supernatural danger and accounts of ancient catastrophe. They are distinct from wights, the animated dead that threaten the living. Their limited direct appearances in the novels make uncertainty part of their identity: characters possess stories, partial observations and fears rather than a comprehensive species handbook.

The television adaptation's White Walkers should not be used to fill every gap in the books. In particular, screen accounts of leadership and origins are separate adaptation claims. The Others give the struggle for southern thrones a wider context, since an unresolved danger may make the protagonists' immediate political victories fragile or irrelevant.
