Overview
Linda De Jager’s local retelling identifies Omumborombonga with the leadwood tree. The first man, woman and oxen emerge from it, while sheep and goats emerge beneath a flat stone. She names Mukuru and Kamungundu as the first ancestor and woman; this is her selected telling, not a universal genealogy.
In Martha Mukaiwa’s 2025 interview, Namibian artist Vitjitua Ndjiharine draws on the Ovaherero creation tree in her contemporary Solarpunk exhibition. She calls it a living ancestor and discusses nature as kin rather than property. Her own account supplies a present-day cultural interpretation.
The exhibition’s imagined future and artistic materials are contemporary expressions, not additional ancient episodes. The witnesses establish an Ovaherero association in Namibia without making the tradition identical to all Namibian beliefs or fixing its earliest oral date.
