Overview
In Weeks’s eighth tale, Gazelle first persuades Leopard to plant boiled maize, while secretly planting a little raw grain in Leopard’s field. Gazelle’s crop flourishes; Leopard’s mostly fails. Leopard then steals maize from his neighbour by night. Gazelle carves a wooden image called Nkondi and places it in the farm to catch the thief.
The image identifies Leopard as the thief and invites him to strike. His first paw sticks, followed by the other paw; kicking and biting attach his feet and mouth too. Image and animal fall together. Gazelle finds and punishes Leopard, then makes a charm from cut leaves to free him. The theft stops afterwards.
The chapter gives the image speech and adhesive action without describing a sculptural style. It therefore supports a particular story-agent, not a claim that every real nkondi artifact behaved this way. The English display qualifier identifies this episode rather than a separate traditional proper name.
