Overview
The Ngondwa-Twiya account describes an animal of the water that excavates riverbanks and digs throughout the river. Water gushes out where it digs. Meeting it is presented as fatal: it is said to make a person perish in the water. The animal bears little horns on its head and is called an antelope of the waters. Its frightening appearance is tied to those horns and the threat of drowning.
The main French description calls it a little water animal, while Jacottet’s footnote gives it the form of a large antelope living in water. That difference is retained rather than resolved into an invented measurement. The note explains the name through the small horns, twiya. The text supplies no named encounter, species identification, colour, herd or successful escape. It is one of several separately named fabulous river creatures in the volume; its bank-digging behaviour belongs to this description, rather than to every Zambezi water being.
Origins & earliest records
Jacottet’s 1901 Textes Louyi prints original-language tales with French translations. Introduction pp. i–ii distinguishes Kaboukou’s 1895 dictation from material supplied by Akaende and Maroumo in June–July 1900. It says individual assignments depend on contents markers; the inspected narrative heading does not independently identify this tale’s teller, so its individual attribution remains unconfirmed.
Records & interpretation
Complete selected French text and surrounding notes read. Unexplained mechanisms remain unexplained; neighbouring tales and collector hypotheses do not supply extra actions.

- The body calls Ngondwa-Twiya a small water animal that excavates river banks, causing water to surge and travellers to perish. It describes small horns and calls it an aquatic antelope. The editor’s footnote instead says a large antelope form, a size discrepancy preserved rather than silently standardized. These are historical fantastic-animal descriptions, not a scientific species identification.
Historical French rendering; whole volume not claimed read. Printed-page labels taken from retained primary OCR, not separately visually collated in this batch. No ritual wording, song, recipe, image or new quotation copied.
