Overview

Minnesota’s account describes Necturus maculosus as brown or grey with dark spots, small eyes and a paddle-like tail. It remains aquatic throughout its life and keeps conspicuous external gills. Four toes on each hind foot help distinguish it from tiger salamander larvae, which have five. Rocky shelter also provides nesting habitat; females attach eggs beneath submerged structures and guard them. State-specific conservation categories should not be read as a global assessment.

Missouri’s February 2026 identification response calls a Lake of the Ozarks animal an adult common mudpuppy, N. maculosus maculosus. It reports daytime shelter beneath logs, rocks and roots, with activity throughout the year and angler records from reservoirs and rivers. The subspecies label belongs to that identified observation; it does not relabel every member of the species. Gills can vary in appearance, so no universal plume size or oxygen-response direction is fixed here.
