Overview
Nana Durimi is the first of three named female tree spirits closing this chapter. Tremearne glosses her name as Lady Ficus. Her announcement identifies her with Jan Gari and calls her a giver of cold. The explanation attached to the song says that she can make someone sitting under the ficus feel cold when she wishes; the collector also associates her with listlessness, while marking his own suggestion about sitting beneath the tree as uncertain.
Her representation moves around waving a cloth, then jumps, sneezes and departs. The song largely repeats her announcement with a change of pronouns, so the source records a concise tree association and performance rather than an extensive narrative. Tremearne proposes a former totemic origin for the group, but says it is not known as such in the accounts he received. That proposed historical explanation is kept separate from the named spirit and recorded gestures.
