Overview
Nalougwana is the little bird that brings news after Mwalé vanishes into the ground while pounding sorghum. It travels to her mother and describes the woman’s disappearance together with the basket, plate, mortar and pestle. The listeners pay attention to its message; the mother and younger sister weep. The younger sister then visits the site and recovers Mwalé through her own repeated lamenting calls. The bird communicates the location and event, but is not said to pull the woman from the earth itself.
Jacottet could not identify this bird biologically. His note distinguishes a messenger carrying news from an accusing bird that reveals a criminal and brings about punishment. That distinction matters here: the narrative reports an imposed household task and an extraordinary disappearance, followed by recovery and Mwalé’s departure to her family. The bird does not pronounce a sentence on the mother-in-law or restore a dead person. Its local name and this precise role are retained without turning it into a universal African messenger or importing the actions of other birds in the collector’s comparisons.
Origins & earliest records
Jacottet’s 1901 Textes Louyi prints original-language tales with French translations. Introduction pp. i–ii distinguishes Kaboukou’s 1895 dictation from material supplied by Akaende and Maroumo in June–July 1900. It says individual assignments depend on contents markers; the inspected narrative heading does not independently identify this tale’s teller, so its individual attribution remains unconfirmed.
Records & interpretation
Complete selected French text and surrounding notes read. Unexplained mechanisms remain unexplained; neighbouring tales and collector hypotheses do not supply extra actions.
