Monotropa uniflora

Overview

Monotropa uniflora is a flowering plant rather than a mushroom. Missouri’s field account describes white or pinkish stems bearing scales instead of ordinary foliage, with one nodding urn-shaped flower on each stalk. The flower turns upward as seeds mature. The plant lacks chlorophyll and receives nourishment through fungi connected to tree roots; its pale appearance does not mean a normal green plant has simply been bleached.

Young and colleagues sampled fifteen root clusters from three central British Columbia sites and compared morphology with molecular evidence. Each plant’s root clusters appeared dominated by a single fungal association in Russulaceae, while the sampled material yielded several molecular patterns. The indexed abstract supports strong local specificity, not one fungal species shared by every ghost pipe worldwide. It concerns root associations; a macro illustration cannot demonstrate fungal pegs, DNA identity or a complete underground carbon pathway.
