Imagined museum teaching display about school history.
Setting, tools and layout imagined; not ethnographic evidence.
Overview
The Monacan Indian Nation describes its community around Bear Mountain and its tribal museum there. Tribal volunteers operate the museum, whose public work includes school-group visits and interpretation of community history. The Nation’s account places the return of mission land in 1995.
Virginia’s Department of Historic Resources records the surviving log school’s history under segregated schooling and its present ownership by the Nation. It lists the property in the National Register in 1997. This specific educational history is not a reconstruction of Monacan ceremonies or ancestral village life.
