Overview
Along the Magdalena in Tolima, the Mohán appears as a large, long-haired, bearded man carrying tobacco. The Ibagué heritage account places one appearance at Puerto de la Caimanera in Espinal. He pursues women washing beside the river and promises enduring youth, drawing them toward an underwater cavern of treasure. Fishermen negotiate with this owner of the waters for a successful catch; his generosity and menace belong to the same relationship.
Jorge Morales Gómez studies the Mohán among Colombian accounts of encantos: hidden beings whose underground or underwater riches recall Indigenous populations displaced during conquest. The figure can emerge from the depths, resemble a powerful shaman, and disappear again. Later cultural works give him new settings. Jesús Niño Botia’s 1983 Ibagué mural joins the river, washerwomen, and Mohán, while a 2017 radio chronicle from Honda places both the being and local fishing life under pressure from pollution.
Origins & earliest records
The inspected witnesses include a twentieth-century scholarly discussion, an identifiable 1983 mural, and a 2017 radio catalogue. Morales Gómez cites earlier Mohán writing from 1947 and 1951, but those original articles were not independently inspected here. These dates establish documented circulation and interpretation, rather than a first telling or a single historical birthplace.
Records & interpretation
The Ibagué heritage record supplies the localized appearance and washerwomen episode. Morales Gómez provides an interpretation of river encounters and hidden riches in relation to conquest and interethnic history. The radio catalogue confirms its producers, Honda setting, date, and environmental synopsis; its audio was not listened to. Features vary across the regional accounts.
