Overview
The Misak are a living Indigenous people with an important territorial centre at Guambía, in the municipality of Silvia, Cauca. The Colombian anthropology institute’s community introduction also records settlement elsewhere, including Huila, Valle del Cauca and Bogotá, amid land shortages and armed conflict. It describes organization through cabildos and the role of taitas as spiritual and political authorities. Nam Trik is part of this cultural setting. Neither residence outside Guambía nor participation in a particular institution should be confused with disappearance of Misak identity; the community is not confined to one museum representation or rural settlement.
Community-directed education has been an explicit field of political action. In a joint statement dated 22 January 2018, CRIC and the Misak ancestral authority argued that inadequate funding impeded language revitalization, culturally appropriate buildings, support for students with additional needs and continuity between educational stages. The text situates these demands within a history of resistance to assimilation. It is a dated statement by the participating authorities, not an independent determination of every legal claim or a report of present funding conditions.
A July 2025 Guambía cabildo announcement marked forty years of the Misak education process. Its invitation connects education with territorial recovery, food autonomy, oral knowledge, family life and intercultural relations. Learning is presented as a collective responsibility extending beyond classroom instruction. The anniversary refers to an organized educational process, not to the beginning of Misak knowledge or teaching. The public announcement was read; its embedded programme was not independently inspected.
The cabildo’s educational catalogue gives named authors a visible place in this work. It lists Clemencia Morales, Mariano Eliceo Cuchillo and collaborative publications by Abelino Hurtado, Misael Aranda and Guillermo Vasco, alongside institutional educational plans. These references show a varied written record; listing a title is not a claim to have read its complete contents. The cabildo also presents a memory project using archival sound and photographs to revisit land recovery, including accounts associated with Tranal, Michambe and San Fernando. Its written descriptions connect the struggles of the 1980s with later community life. The audio episodes themselves were not listened to for this account.
