Overview

The familiar floating, jellyfishlike Metroid attaches to other organisms and drains their energy. Nintendo identifies the species as an artificial Chozo creation intended to destroy the X parasite on SR388. Others seek to weaponize that feeding ability, bringing the creatures into repeated conflict. The species name does not identify Samus herself: its fictional Chozo meaning, ultimate warrior, belongs to the story's language.

Space Pirates steal Metroids discovered by Federation researchers, but the later saga complicates a simple extermination narrative. A newly hatched animal imprints on Samus; in Super Metroid, the stolen hatchling ultimately sacrifices itself to save her. Nintendo's pre-release Dread account describes the species as extinct at that story's opening. This dated framing does not imply identical population status across every experiment, remake or branch of the franchise.

First appearances & development

The first Japanese Metroid release was in 1986; later NES editions followed in different regions. The selected bibliography traces the original weaponization premise, the hatchling's role in Super Metroid and the legacy entering Dread. It does not attempt to catalogue every developmental form, Prime-era experiment or remake change as an independent species.

Canon & continuity

Nintendo's reports provide both the species explanation and the selected story chronology. Artificial origin, energy feeding and the hatchling relationship are documented claims, while the name's fictional meaning is distinguished from production etymology. These publisher summaries were inspected; the bibliography does not claim new complete playthroughs of the underlying games.
