Imagined consultation and language checking leading to educational sharing.
Setting, tools and layout imagined; not ethnographic evidence.
Overview
A 2020 Torres Strait Regional Authority report describes Meriam Traditional Owners working with Mer Gedkem Le and ecological-knowledge staff on a seasonal calendar. Workshops, locally supplied artwork and Elder language checking supported the project’s educational purpose. This account concerns the Meriam community of Mer, not all Torres Strait peoples; its public description does not license invention of authentic calendar knowledge.
The PBC directory identifies Mer Gedkem Le as trustee for Meriam native-title rights and interests recognised in the 1992 Mabo and 2001 Passi cases. This institutional account complements community-led language transmission while keeping legal recognition distinct from the origins or entirety of Meriam culture.
