AI interpretation of Mbona hiding as a guinea fowl.
Modern AI interpretation. Bird, forest and enemies are imagined; no sacred-site reconstruction.
Overview
Malawi’s Department of Culture account, hosted by UNESCO, places Mbona in Mang’anja oral tradition during the rise of the Lundu Kingdom. It attributes rainmaking, wells in sandy ground and new forests to him.
He hides from enemies by changing into creatures including guinea fowls. Khulubvi in Nsanje is identified as a worshipping place. These are attributed legendary powers; no rite or sacred interior is reconstructed.
