Overview
The novel’s official account makes Maurice the talking cat behind the scheme: towns need a piper to remove troublesome rats, and he supplies both rodents and a pipe-playing child. The Clan includes Dangerous Beans, Peaches, Hamnpork, Darktan and Sardines. Hamnpork’s preference for physical dominance contrasts with the thinking brought by the Change.
Bad Blintz disrupts the arrangement. Although supposedly plagued, it has no visible rats, while ratcatchers display tails for payment. The estate’s film description adds ginger fur and an encounter with the bookish Malicia; those details identify the adaptation rather than every novel portrayal.
