Overview
Jane Thato Dewah’s 2014 heritage dissertation places Matsieng’s emergence near Mochudi. Its selected account calls him a one-legged ancestor, followed from the underworld by people, domestic stock and wild animals. Soft rock retains his tracks; a site custodian is cited for this detail.
Dewah also records Matsieng imprisoned underground by Tintibane and escaping with Lowe’s help. That account differs from the researchers’ creator-servant relationship.
Van der Ryst, Lombard and Biemond record farm worker Thuso Modise identifying Riverslee engravings with Matsieng and his animals. Their account makes the one-legged giant creator Lowe’s servant; people and animals follow his emergence.
The researchers distinguish origin narratives from archaeological authorship, arguing that earlier hunter-gatherers made the engravings later interpreted by Tswana communities. Sites and traditions extend beyond one modern border. The legend explains remembered emergence; it does not prove a giant made the surviving rock art.
