Overview

Manda's body makes encirclement its defining threat. A sea dragon long enough to coil around a submarine or structure can endanger machinery without needing a humanoid fighter's stance. It moves underwater and can traverse land, linking the creature's original imperial setting with later attacks above the surface.

Atragon presents it as Mu's guardian, sent against the Gotengo submarine when that vessel threatens the undersea empire. The submarine's freezing weapon defeats it in that confrontation. Destroy All Monsters later places Manda within Monsterland and the alien-driven worldwide crisis; Final Wars supplies another sea-dragon treatment. The guardian of Mu and the later ensemble monster therefore share a design concept, not automatically one continuous duty to the same surviving empire.

First appearances & development

Atragon (1963), directed by Ishiro Honda, introduced Manda as Mu's undersea guardian. Destroy All Monsters (1968) and Final Wars (2004) reused the creature in different contexts. The profile preserves those distinct primary settings rather than treating every later submarine or city encounter as another episode in Mu's original history.

Canon & continuity

The inspected official guide directly identifies Mu, the Gotengo encounter, constriction and the freezing attack, and links the later films. This provides a specific film-based sea dragon, separate from traditional dragon catalogues. No exact historic empire, natural ancestry or universal magical breath power is inferred from the fictional imagery.
