Overview
Maleku communities are based in northern Costa Rica’s Guatuso area, including the settlements known as Margarita, El Sol and Tonjibe. The language is also written Malecu and appears as Guatuso in older linguistic scholarship. Carlos Sánchez Avendaño’s overview places it within the Votic branch of Chibchan. It reports community perceptions of pronunciation and vocabulary differences among settlements, while acknowledging that detailed studies are limited. Language vitality varies between places and families; the overview’s older census figures cannot determine present fluency or define who belongs to the people. Linguistic classification likewise does not establish biological ancestry.
A June 2025 university report describes a mapping workshop promoted by the Colectivo de Gestores Malekus in Margarita on 17 May. Participants, mainly women, discussed territorial recovery and conflicting institutional representations of boundaries. They also replaced Spanish place-names on the working map with names in their own language. These actions connect public documentation with community priorities and recognize women’s leadership. The account records participants’ concerns; it is not an independent adjudication of property ownership or a claim that every recovery effort has been completed. The underlying map is not reproduced here.
Contemporary authorship is visible in the Enciclopedia Malecu de los Animales, presented in February 2025. Eduardo Muñoz Sequeira’s report credits Maleku researcher Raquel Fonseca Marín and linguist Carlos Sánchez Avendaño, with specialist advice from Nísida Elizondo Muñoz. Fonseca describes gathering knowledge through trusted relationships across the three settlements. The monolingual educational work organizes animals through Maleku categories, supplemented where possible with scientific and Spanish names. The report also records that sharing knowledge required discussion within the community. This description concerns the publication process and credited collaboration; the complete encyclopedia and its individual animal accounts have not been independently examined.
Livelihoods and cooperation extend beyond cultural publication. A February 2024 university report quotes Rebeca Marchena Quirós, identified as a Maleku representative and cacao-platform leader, reflecting on collaboration with producers in Upala, Guatuso and Los Chiles. She describes learning about cacao varieties, exchanging information and contacting other producers when supplies were short. Her experience belongs to a particular regional network that also included non-Maleku participants. It should not be generalized into a universal occupation or a measure of all households’ prosperity. The report relates results discussed in November 2023 and hopes for continued support, keeping later aspirations distinct from verified outcomes.
