Overview

This profile covers Makonde communities in Mozambique, as identified in a community-supported national nomination to UNESCO. It does not generalize to Makonde communities elsewhere.

Mapiko combines masked theatrical dance with drumming and opposing choirs. The masks depict people or animals. Performances take place at initiations and funerals, and for entertainment.

Experienced practitioners pass on values and performance knowledge during initiation, and young people take part. Practising communities interpret the meanings, including those concerning gender relations.
