Overview

MBARI observations revealed that the barreleye has tubular eyes capped by green lenses inside a transparent, fluid-filled head shield. They can turn upward or forward; the dark spots above the mouth are scent organs, not its eyes. Remotely operated vehicles observed fish almost motionless at depths of six hundred to eight hundred metres off central California. A live specimen in a shipboard aquarium confirmed eye rotation as the fish changed body orientation. Its broad flat fins assist precise positioning.

The University of Texas marine account places Macropinna microstoma around the northern Pacific rim, from Japan through the Bering Sea to Baja California. It describes movable tubular eyes housed within a clear protective shield. Underwater observations near Monterey Bay showed that the eyes can aim forward as well as upward. The account proposes that eye rotation could keep a potential meal in view as the body turns, and discusses feeding among jellyfish tentacles as a possibility, rather than a demonstrated routine.
