Overview

Macra are giant crustacean-like creatures whose dependence on poisonous gas connects their bodies to the environments they control. The original serial makes the apparently contented human colony a system of exploitation: its inhabitants are conditioned to extract material the Macra need even though that material endangers human life. Official messages denying the creatures' existence protect the system, so identifying the monster requires challenging the colony's claimed normality. Hypnotic power and organized manipulation make these Macra more than animals wandering into a settlement. Their biology supplies the motive for a political arrangement, but the serial does not turn that single colony into an exhaustive history of Macra society throughout the universe.

Gridlock places Macra beneath the sealed motorway of New New York in the very distant future. The official guide describes this population as having declined from the earlier intelligent form; it consumes the fumes and attacks vehicles descending into the lower lanes. The Doctor's opening of the motorway changes the habitat and releases the trapped population above it. These two appearances therefore provide a meaningful comparison rather than two duplicate entries for differently sized crabs. What threatens people in one story is institutional coercion, whereas the other emphasizes dangerous ecological entrapment and predation. The profile does not assign the original hypnotic control to every later individual or claim that all intervening evolution has been documented. Classification as a creature profile follows this predator comparison; the early form's sapience is expressly retained instead of erased.

First appearances & development

Ian Stuart Black's 1967 serial establishes the controlling colony population; Russell T Davies's 2007 episode reintroduces Macra in a radically later setting. The comparison concerns these two television treatments. Animated reconstructions, production designs and gameplay depictions are not used to declare additional evolutionary stages between them.

Canon & continuity

BBC Studios' creature account explicitly contrasts hypnotic colonial control with a far-future decline and motorway predation. The two official episode pages verify credits and dates. The decline is retained as the franchise guide's interpretation, while the description avoids inventing a documented evolutionary chain across the intervening time.
