Overview
Maba is said by some to be another son of Mallam Geshe, complicating the statement elsewhere that Haukachi is the only son. The notice describes him arriving with youthful spirits such as Mai-Lema, Yaura, Kaura or Haukachi. They sit while he stands among them singing, and then all dance together. Another representation has him sitting, rubbing the body and rolling from side to side with the school-associated group.
His song moves through travel, begging and an excessive gift. A chief’s son goes begging and receives a cow; the spirit then complains that he is neither boxer nor butcher and asks what he can do with a horned bull in the city. The collector treats this as embarrassment at having received too much. A marabout-bird comparison occurs within the song, but does not establish Maba as a transforming bird. His parentage remains attributed only to some informants.
