Overview

The Eurasian otter, Welsh Dyfrgi, is a semiaquatic carnivore of rivers, lakes and coasts. Coastal otters need fresh water for bathing and land holts for resting and breeding. Inland habitat combines food with vegetated banks, islands, reedbeds and woodland.

JNCC site accounts record otters through much of the Welsh Afon Teifi catchment. At Cors Caron, amphibians are spring prey for breeding otters, and the River Wye provides bank cover, food and breeding scrub. JNCC's European account identifies strong populations in Greece. Declines have been linked to pollution, hunting and habitat loss, and toxic organochlorines contributed in Britain. Those trend accounts are undated, so no current population is given.

The Natural History Museum's species dictionary accepts Lutra lutra (Linnaeus, 1758); the authority dates the name, not the species' origin. A genomic repository lineage places it in Carnivora, Mustelidae, Lutrinae and Lutra. Lutra felina is a synonym of Lontra felina and is not this species.
