Overview

The Himalayan monal is a ground-dwelling pheasant, Lophophorus impejanus. Adult males have a long metallic-green crest, copper-red neck plumage and iridescent blue, green and purple feathers. A white back and rump patch becomes conspicuous in flight. Tail feathers are reddish brown with darker tips. Females have subdued brownish plumage and a pale foreneck patch.

In Great Himalayan National Park, monals occupy conifer forest, alpine meadows and grassy slopes. They dig through soil and leaf litter for roots, tubers, seeds and invertebrates, and descend to lower elevations in winter. The account records winter communal roosting flocks and breeding-season pairs. These observations describe the park population rather than a fixed daily routine throughout the entire species range.

A Sacramento Zoo keeper account explains that young males initially resemble brown females, then acquire the bright adult colours gradually, taking up to two years. Its observed male still retained juvenile plumage shortly before that age. The keeper also recorded digging as a natural foraging behaviour. Age and sex therefore matter when comparing this selected adult male appearance with other monals.
