Overview
Guevara reproduces a description attributed in its footnote to Manuel Longuitue, a young Mapuche collaborator. Llul llul is a small animal with a cat’s head and a conspicuous tail, living in the sea as an owner of water. Its movement offshore brings rain and fair weather at sea, with seabirds following. The account says the waters would accompany it if it left the sea.
A different telling, Cuento de un terremoto, is credited to Nahuel Huinca of Maquehua. During an earthquake, diviners predict that a Caicai will emerge from a lake and join Llul llul, a conjunction that would end the world. The reported response includes a human killing, but the source is a narrated recollection and does not independently establish that event. On the fourth day the lake being emerges amid a whirlwind-like disturbance; people turn it back and the shaking stops. Llul llul itself neither appears nor fights in the ending. This tale’s feared meeting should not be substituted for the coastal description’s weather-governing role.
Origins & earliest records
Guevara 1908 pp.322–324 supplies Manuel Longuitue’s description, crossing an illustration page. The separate Nahuel Huinca story occupies pp.335–336. The collector’s claims about how widely a belief was held are period assertions, not a current community survey.
Records & interpretation
Complete selected public narratives and their named attributions were visually inspected in the original scanned pages. Guevara’s colonial hierarchies and speculative cultural history are not adopted as facts.
