Overview
The Atlantic horseshoe crab is a marine arthropod, despite a common name suggesting an ordinary crab. NOAA distinguishes its relationships from those of crustaceans and compares it with spiders and scorpions. A smooth hard horseshoe-shaped shell covers the animal, and its long tail helps steering and righting after overturning. It reworks sediment while feeding on marine worms and other invertebrates. Egg production also supports predators and migrating birds; the geological antiquity of horseshoe-crab ancestors does not make this species an unchanged fossil.
NOAA Fisheries describes a hard front and back shell and a tail called the telson, which does not sting. Along Delaware Bay, spawning concentrates on sandy beaches in May and June, especially around high tides at new and full moons. Eggs laid in buried clusters feed shorebirds replenishing energy during migration. Young animals remain near shore before moving farther offshore. The 2018 account documents this seasonal food-web role without turning its historical harvest figures or management statements into a present-day population census.
