Overview

Lickanantay, also called Atacameño in the selected sources, is a living Indigenous identity represented here through communities of the Salar de Atacama basin in northern Chile. The Consejo de Pueblos Atacameños describes itself as an association representing eighteen communities of Atacama La Grande, including Toconao, Socaire, Peine and San Pedro de Atacama. Each retains its own legal personality. The council’s establishment in 1994 is an organizational date, not the origin of the people. Its defined remit should not be expanded into a claim that one association encompasses every Lickanantay person or community.

The council identifies territorial preservation and community wellbeing as objectives. Its heritage unit, established in 2023, brings community heritage representatives together and produces the periodical Atta Anu. The unit’s page identifies Paula Herrera as coordinator, but provides no date establishing how long that staffing information remains current. This is evidence of organized heritage work and publishing, not a reading of the magazine’s individual issues. Community institutions have specific functions; a council, heritage unit and language organization should not be treated as interchangeable names.

An interview published by UNESCO on 19 February 2021 offers an educator’s perspective on language renewal. The educator describes adapting visual-arts teaching to intercultural education, including remote work during the pandemic. She connects language, territory, historical memory and practical activities such as weaving and ceramics, while also describing disagreement and frustration during curriculum consultation. The retrieved text does not identify her by name, so none is assigned here. Its 2026 update date does not make these pandemic-era statements a new interview or a current assessment of all schools.

A June 2025 heritage-service report documents a separate initiative: La Huella Teatro donated five hundred copies of the Diccionario Unificado de la Lengua Ckunsa for distribution to public schools and Indigenous organizations in metropolitan Santiago. The report identifies the YOCKONTUR project, support from the language council and UNESCO, and Escondida–BHP sponsorship. Rubén Reyes Aymani, named as language-council president at that event, advocated circulation beyond the original territory. The completed donation is distinguished from intended later distribution. Neither the dictionary’s title nor its sponsorship proves universal agreement on spelling, and the complete book was not inspected. These witnesses describe particular institutions and contributors rather than uniform language proficiency or political citizenship.
