Overview

Dora Thornton describes Kongo luxury cloths woven from raffia, cut and rubbed to produce a soft pile. European collections preserved examples from the sixteenth century onward. Their cushion formats reflect European tastes, but whether Europeans commissioned them or Kongo leaders developed new markets remains unresolved. Listed possible origins span three present-day countries; this is historical attribution, not a census of living communities.
