Overview
The Kankuamo are a living Indigenous people of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in northern Colombia. ONIC’s introduction situates them alongside the Kogui, Arhuaco and Wiwa and reproduces a Kankuamo explanation of their shared responsibilities for the Sierra. The familiar image of four supports holding up a table expresses an interdependent territorial relationship. It does not erase the distinct identity of each people. ONIC’s older demographic and language figures contain inconsistencies and are not used here as current measurements of population, language knowledge or the boundaries of belonging.
A substantial public testimony by Jaime Enrique Arias Arias, dated 3 May 2022 and published by the Indigenous technical secretariat of the Mesa Permanente de Concertación in September 2023, offers a named political perspective. He argues that organizations need stronger relationships with their territorial bases and that economic and cultural autonomy belong together. His criticism extends to administrative obstacles, internal divisions and the risk of treating Indigenous people as decorative folklore instead of political actors. The text also distinguishes his words from editorial explanations. These are his reflections and proposals, rather than an uncontested institutional programme or a statement of current law.
Community reporting makes women’s participation visible within contemporary education. In July 2026, the cabildo reported the conclusion of the second Escuela de Armonización Territorial para el Cuidado de la Vida. The Commission of Kankuamo Women and Families promoted this process with the territorial authorities’ endorsement and a CISP partnership. Its four modules addressed self-government, care for land, women and families, and access to justice. The report connects this learning with political participation and leadership. It describes one particular educational initiative; its aims should not be converted into a claim that all barriers to participation have been resolved.
Educational continuity also requires physical resources. A separate cabildo report records the inauguration of four primary-school classrooms in Atánquez on 6 July 2026, attended by local authorities, teachers, families and students. It identifies the project as financed through resources administered by the resguardo. This is evidence of a specific completed construction and public handover, not an independent assessment of all teaching outcomes. Read together, the testimony and school reports present community life as an ongoing field of organization, disagreement, learning and practical investment. Participation in a programme is not treated as a rule for determining Kankuamo identity.
Public communication also involves named Kankuamo creators working across communities. ONIC’s 1 May 2015 announcement credits Kankuamo producer Silsa Matilde Arias Martínez with coordinating Colombia Originaria, a radio series developed through its Indigenous communications system. Tayrona Estereo contributed alongside Wayuu, Embera, Zenú, Tule and other Indigenous broadcasting collectives. The announcement proposed weekly transmission beginning on 3 May, through national public radio and ONIC’s virtual station. Arias framed participation in broadcasting as a right to public expression and intercultural recognition, resisting the reduction of Indigenous people to decorative folklore. The source documents a collaborative production and its announced launch, not a single Kankuamo political voice or a verified continuing broadcast schedule. The programmes themselves have not been listened to here.
