Overview
Francisco Rodríguez Atencio’s narrative, published by Enrique Margery Peña, begins with a young woman who lives with her father. A rifle-bearing stranger identifies himself as Inu Sulin and raises a hand to cause her pregnancy, promising to return for her. Jirondai is born with a face on each side of his head. After he grows, his mother disappears and the men of his people unite around his power. Margery distinguishes the two-faced birth episode from other accounts in his corpus that omit this physical trait.
In Adriana Berna’s 2023 interview, poet and cultural worker Ubia Üai Jä associates Jirondai with La Montaña Sagrada at Cerro Peña Blanca and ceremonial places across the Tabasará drainage. He also describes Jirondai among remembered warriors and connects him with a struggle against the ruler called Mredra. These community interpretations present a sacred heroic presence and a history of resistance, rather than turning the unusual birth into a description of a threatening monster.
Origins & earliest records
Margery’s 1990 article identifies Rodríguez Atencio as a San Félix-born narrator living in Coto Brus and places the recorded corpus between October 1988 and October 1989. Publication and recording delimit this particular witness. Berna’s 2023 interview separately documents Ubia Üai Jä’s present-day account of mountain heritage; neither source dates the tradition’s beginning.
Records & interpretation
The primary article supplies the original-language transcription, Spanish translations and the complete birth episode on pp. 100–101. Berna directly attributes mountain and warrior statements to Ubia Üai Jä. The profile preserves those different narrative settings; it does not treat the scholarly collector’s Bocotá label and the interview’s broader Ngäbe-Buglé framing as interchangeable ethnic identities.
