Javanese batik cap
Overview
A cap applies hot wax as a complete pattern element. Soldered copper strips and pins form a flat printing face beneath a supporting grid, with an iron handle for lifting. It speeds the waxing stage compared with drawing each line.
Powerhouse’s pair was bought in Java in 1973. The museum estimates earlier manufacture around 1950–1955, probably in central Java, from the worn objects and purchase history; no maker is identified.
