Overview
Jam Maraki is linked in Tremearne’s heading to the white Maraki tree. The account presents him as a spirit of intoxication and gives him a club rather than Kuri’s pestle. His representation jumps about on the knees in a similar manner to Kuri. The song makes the contrast more particular: it describes tobacco smoking, beer, protruding lips, a rolling tongue and stumbling, then addresses a great spirit who behaves like a boy.
The announcement printed for this notice uses the name Arni, while the song names Jam Maraki. The following notice separately describes Arni, Chief of the Farmers, so the shared name in the announcement is not silently resolved into one identity. Tremearne’s suggestion that Jam Maraki was probably an ancestor belongs to his interpretation. The supported account is a named tree-associated spirit, a club-bearing representation and a song that criticizes his behavior despite his standing.
