Overview
The closing section of the Yaui/Tariana telling explicitly introduces a ritual figure as Izi’s companion. He tells youths beneath the Uaku tree to fast and threatens to eat them if they refuse. They will not obey; later he seizes and swallows them all. Their fathers arrange a large caxiri drinking gathering and invite him. After he has become thoroughly drunk, the elders burn him in revenge.
A Uatanhon palm grows from his ashes during the night and rises until its leaves touch the sky. His soul ascends through the palm’s centre in the form of an akuti-puru, glossed in Rodrigues’s note as a squirrel. The elders cut the tree down to prevent his return. The ending does not say the swallowed youths are restored. The figure is an unnamed companion rather than another name for Izi, who has already gone to the sky in the preceding narrative.
