Overview

Virginia sweetspire is an arching shrub, wider than its height of one to one and a half metres. Foliage ranges from deciduous to evergreen. Simple leaves alternate along branches, have fine marginal teeth and glossy green upper surfaces, and may turn crimson or purple in autumn.

Lightly scented white flowers have five petals and form cylindrical clusters at branch ends during summer. Narrow, hairy capsules contain numerous tiny seeds. The account places the native range from New Jersey to Florida and west to Missouri, Louisiana and eastern Texas. Moist fertile soil suits it, though it tolerates wetter and drier conditions.
