Overview

Israel Hands is the Hispaniola's coxswain in Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. The narrative initially presents him as an experienced, cautious seaman whose practical abilities can be trusted in difficult circumstances. He also participates in the conversation that Jim overhears from the apple barrel, revealing his place among Silver's conspirators. Seamanship and loyalty therefore remain separate questions. Later testimony identifies him as a former gunner under Flint; that is a relationship within the novel, not a claim that the fictional episode documents the life of a historical pirate bearing the same name.

When Jim boards the drifting schooner, Hands is propped against the bulwarks, pale beneath his tan and visibly weak. The other watchman, O'Brien, lies dead. Jim first suspects a drunken fight, while Hands's subsequent words acknowledge responsibility for killing O'Brien. Hands asks for brandy and then offers a bargain: food, drink and a cloth for his wound in return for instructions to sail the vessel. Jim supplies a silk handkerchief belonging to his mother, helping bind the stab wound in Hands's thigh. As his condition improves, the coxswain's watching expression remains threatening.

Hands directs the difficult passage into North Inlet with considerable skill. Their immediate interests coincide because both need the schooner safely stranded, but this cooperation does not establish trust. He sends Jim below on a pretext and retrieves a short dirk from a coil of rope. Jim secretly sees the act. Hands then claims to lack a knife while asking the boy to cut tobacco. His argument that striking first is preferable to goodness clarifies the danger in his apparent dependence. His instruction and deception operate together rather than replacing one another.

As the ship approaches the beach, Hands advances with the weapon. Jim evades him, and the vessel's sudden grounding interrupts their struggle. The boy climbs to the cross-trees; Hands follows painfully with the dirk in his teeth. After speaking as though he must surrender, he throws it into Jim's shoulder. Jim's pistols discharge, and Hands falls into the water. The account describes grizzled hair, age, a tanned face and the injured thigh; it does not give him Silver's wooden leg or O'Brien's red cap. Modern faces and garments are interpretive. His role centres on the dangerous conjunction of expert navigation, bodily vulnerability and opportunistic violence.
