Overview
The giant lives with other people in a fjord settlement and stands astride the water to catch passing whales by hand. When his neighbours pursue a whale in boats, he scoops both prey and vessels out of the water and deposits them on the beach. The episode makes his relation to the community more specific than an indiscriminate man-eater: he intervenes in their hunting without destroying the crews.
During a later rest on a hill he tells his neighbours to wake him with stones if approaching bears become a concern. On seeing the two animals, he dismisses them as fox-sized trifles. He kills one between his fingers and the other against a boot eyelet. These scale reversals explain the figures' extraordinary contrast without yielding literal measurements. Boas's footnote points to a fuller1888 Berlin publication, which has not been independently read here; the profile is bounded by the complete printed selection.
Origins & earliest records
Boas published this witness in The Central Eskimo (1888), a work based chiefly on his Cumberland Sound and Davis Strait travels and supplemented by other travellers' reports. The selected passage does not supply a named speaker or a specific interview date. Its historical spellings and editorial framework remain attributed rather than generalized to every Inuit region.
